Renys Windham

Windham, in Cumberland County, is a gateway to Sebago Lake, Maine’s deepest lake and one of its most popular summer destinations! Renys opened in Windham in 2016.

Windham’s township was granted in 1734, and grew into a farming center thanks to nearby rivers, which also provided power for mills. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal, which opened in 1832, allowed Windham to transport and sell goods more easily, and by 1859, the town had eight sawmills, two shingle mills, two carding mills, and what would become the largest gunpowder factory in Maine – providing 25 percent of the Union gunpowder supply for the Civil War! When the railroad came to town, so did Androscoggin Pulp Company. South Windham, an industrial village, grew around the paper mill.

Today, Windham is a commercial center where residents and vacationers can shop, dine, play a game of mini golf, and enjoy the Sebago Lake region. It’s a great stop on your next Maine adventure, with so much to do nearby.
