Portland has always been a working waterfront city, from its earliest settlement by Europeans who relied on fishing and trading. When Maine became a state in 1820, Portland was its capital city until 1832. In the nearly two centuries since then, Portland has become a cultural and economic hub for the state. It’s home to colleges, museums, parks, and many of Maine’s major employers.
Although national Prohibition began in Portland, Maine, the city is today known for its craft beer. It’s home to a variety of food festivals and music venues, with lots to do year-round. There’s so much to do and see in Portland. Visit the Arts District, explore the working waterfront, or enjoy nightlife in the Old Port. Catch a Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field and sample local food from a nearly endless array of restaurants.
