Board back local businesses

GARDINER -- A store that caters to archers and anglers, a family retail business, a consignment shop and a utility-service company are this year's Gardiner Board of Trade award winners.

Sportsman's Bows Arrows Rods & Reels at 39 Maine Ave. received the New Business of the Year Award; Renys, 185 Water St., received the President's Award; Raggamuffins, 279 Water St., the Director's Award; and On Target Utility Services, 99 Enterprise Ave., the Technology Business of the Year Award.

Winners will be acknowledged at the annual Board of Trade meeting, 5:30 p.m. March 30, at the EJ Prescott building, Libby Hill Business Park.

Connie Greenleaf, president of the Board of Trade, said she was proud to announce this year's list of business awards "especially given today's challenging economic times.

"Each business contributes very much to Gardiner's economy and is a valuable part of the community," Greenleaf said.

Steve Chaisson, owner of Sportsman's Bows Arrows Rods & Reels, said his business, which opened in a former bowling alley in December 2007, offers a variety of products for outdoor adventures, and recreation services including archery leagues and lessons.

"We're very pleased to receive the award; it was totally unexpected," Chaisson said. "We are striving to be a good business in Gardiner and bring something that the city has been missing for a long time -- sporting goods. Archery and fishing are the primary sports we cater to."

As for Renys, Jason Simcock, director of planning and development for the city, said that, in the world of big-box store development and growing Internet sales, Renys continues to be a destination business for downtown Gardiner.

Simcock said Renys has been around since 1949. It started in Damariscotta. Since then, the store has branched out into 14 locations.

Mary Kay Reny, a family member who does a "myriad of things" including marketing and operations, said her family's business is thrilled to be a part of the Gardiner community and is looking forward to many more years to come.

"Renys is honored to be the recipient of the President's Award," Reny said. "We have been in downtown Gardiner for 53 years, and we thank each and every customer for making this happen."

Raggamuffins, a consignment store that has been around for three years, recently moved to its new location at 279 Water St.

Heidi Hilton, owner, said the store sells previously-owned clothing with name brands such as LL Bean, Abercrombie and Fitch, Gap, and Old Navy.

"It's fabulous," Hilton said. "Any type of award like that is always appreciated. We're really excited about it."

On Target Utility Services began in 1994 by providing underground locating services to the New England utility industry.

Today, Simcock said, it is the largest private-locating company in New England providing locating, ticket-screening and damage investigation services to many of the large and small telephone, power and cable companies throughout New England.

He said the Board of Trade is recognizing On Target for its innovative use of technology and becoming a leader in the industry of underground locating services. Last year, over 1 million locating requests were processed through the company's corporate office in Gardiner, he said.

Although On Target is located at the Libby Hill Business Park, the company is consolidating its Winslow and Pittsfield operations at the former EJ Prescott headquarters on Route 126 in Gardiner.

In addition to underground-location services, On Target provides utility-construction services, including transmission line installations, fiber-optic testing and splicing and other services.

John Fallona, president of On Target Utility Services, said the company also is honored to be selected for the award.

"We enjoy being a part of the Gardiner community and hope to continue growing our business," Fallona said.
